The Great Gatsby: The Demise of Two Dreams Essay -- essays research p
à à à à à While there are numerous themes throughout the text of F. Scott Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s The Great Gatsby, the most prominent is that of the American Dream. The American Dream is the idea that any person, no matter what he or she is, or from where he or she has come, can become successful in life by his or her hard work; it is the idea that a self-sufficient person, an entrepreneur, can be a success. In this novel, however, it is the quest for this ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â¢ (along with the pursuit of a romantic dream) that causes the ultimate downfall of Jay Gatsby. à à à à à Throughout the book, Gatsby avoids the reality of his simple, difficult childhood in efforts to avoid the embarrassment of having lived in poverty during his youth. At the age of seventeen, Jay Gatsby changed his name from James Gatz, marking the beginning of his version of the American Dream. ââ¬Å"His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people [and] his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all [â⬠¦] the truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself [when he] invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year old boy wouldâ⬠(104). And although masked for most of the story, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s childhood provides a key source of determination in his endeavor of achieving the American Dream. à à à à à During Gatsbyââ¬â¢s early adulthood, he joined the army (where he first met Daisy). He initially loved her because of her extraordinary house and because many other men had already loved her. One evening in October, Gatsby fell in love with Daisy Fay, and in turn she fell in love with Gatsby. ââ¬Å"[Daisy] was the first ââ¬Ëniceââ¬â¢ girl that he had ever knownâ⬠(155). Their love was uneasy at first but this uneasiness was lifted when he and Daisy fell in love, and he found that ââ¬Å"she thought [he] knew a lot because [he] knew different things from herâ⬠(157). While their month of love was physically ended when Gatsby went abroad, their emotional love was not and Daisy, in her artificial world, could not understand why Gatsby could not come home; she wanted her love to be with her, she needed some assurance that she was doing the right thing. It was not long however, before Daisy fell in love with a wealthy, former All-American college fo otball player named Tom Buchanan. Gatsbyââ¬â¢s heart was br... ...s romantic dream was dead, his American Dream remained alive and beaming. He still had everything going for him; he had his youth, money, and personality. He was morally superior to his fellow East Eggers and Nick acknowledged this when he told Gatsby that he was ââ¬Å"worth the whole damn bunch put togetherâ⬠(162). To have it all taken away for something he had not done was the greatest misfortune of the entire novel and his death became even more disheartening at his funeral when, despite Nickââ¬â¢s efforts to make it respectable, only he, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s father and servants, and one of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s acquaintances attended. None of his ââ¬Ëfriendsââ¬â¢, nor did the ââ¬Ëlove of his lifeââ¬â¢ come. Nick truly cared about Jay Gatsby as no one else did; he exemplified what a true friend is and did what only a friend would do for another. Daisy, however, did not seem to feel even a shred of sadness, or guilt, over Gatsbyââ¬â¢s death which is apparent in he r not attending his funeral and instead going away on a vacation with Tom. In the end, it was Gatsbyââ¬â¢s strong desire for wealth and Daisy, his version of the American Dream, which proved to be the greatest reason for his grave downfall at the hands of a ruthless society.
The Creation Of The Constitution :: The Constitution
In creating the Constitution, the states had several different reactions, including a rather defensive reaction, but also an understanding reaction. As a document that provided the laws of the land and the rights of its people. It directs its attention to the many problems in this country; it offered quite a challenge because the document lent itself to several views and interpretations, depending upon the individual reading it. It is clear that the foundersââ¬â¢ perspectives as white, wealthy or elite class, American citizens would play a role in the creation and implementation of The Constitution. On further analysis, most of the issues within the document were due to vast cultural, racial, and economic lifestyles that our country did and will continue to support, as unintentional as it may be. This document lessened some of those issues and attempted to accommodate the requests of all states. However, Elitist framers manipulated the idea of a constitution in order to protect their economic interests and the interests of their fellow white land and slave owning men' by restricting the voices of women, slaves, indentured servants and others. The Constitution that was created had a strong central government and weaker state governments. Under the Constitution, Congress was given the power to levy taxes, regulate trade between the states, raise an army, control interstate commerce, and more. A three-branch government was established in which a judicial branch handled disputes in a federal court system, a President headed an executive branch, and a legislative branch. Conversely, the anti-federalists believed in weak central and strong state governments, as the way it was in The Articles of Confederation and believed in strict adherence to the writings of the constitution. Furthermore, the creation of The Constitution caused much debate between the elite and democratic states because they thought that if the Government got all of the power, they would lose their rights. The conflict between the North and South played a major role in the development of this document. The North felt that representation in Congress should be based on the number of total people and South felt that it should be based on number of whites. However, The Three Fifths Compromise settled this when it was said a slave will count as 3/5 of a free person of representatives and taxation. Article one section two of the Constitution defines how the population will be counted, obviously there was a strong opposition to this by Southern states like Virginia because their economy was based on slave labor and they had a bigger population because of it.

Ancestral Influence in Hawthorneââ¬â¢s Writing
Ancestral Influence in Hawthorneââ¬â¢s Writing Can the sins of ancestors pass down upon the next generations? Hawthorne believed that it was possible and he expresses his beliefs through his writings. Hawthorne was well aware of his ancestral consequences of wrongdoings and he held the sense of guilt of his ancestor, so many of his writings were gothic, dark, and dealt with evils. Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s historical background of living in Salem and his ancestral connection to Salem Witch Trial influenced him to question the fate of the family carrying the sin of past mistakes in his novel, the House of the Seven Gables.Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts, and he is the descendent of John Hawthorne, a judge of the Salem Witch trial. During the witch trials, hysteria and delusions clouded everyoneââ¬â¢s eyes and unjust persecutions spread and killed many of the innocents. Judges at the times had the power to persecute the witches, however, the whole incident was a horrible delusion (Wright). This ancestral wrongdoing has hunted Hawthorne throughout his lives. Hawthorne lost his father from the yellow fever when he was four and his mother obliged to live with her parents because they were financially troubled. He lived very isolated because his mother kept herself isolated as well. Hawthorne believed that the depressing circumstances of their family were caused by the curse of victims from Salem Witch Trials (Hawthorne xvi). This belief of Hawthorne clearly is reflected in the characters of the House of the Seven Gables. Similar to Hawthorne, a Salem family of Pyncheons has believed and suffered from the curse passed down from Matthew Maule, an innocent victim of Colonel Pyncheon. He was accused of witchcraft and was executed due to the unjust claim of Colonel. Before Mauleââ¬â¢s death, he proclaimed, ââ¬Å"the God will give him blood to drink,â⬠which came true shortly after when Colonel Pyncheon dies in the same manner as descr ibed by Maule. In the future generations, the decedents of Pyncheon family that have been living in the house was as if trapped in it, they were bonded with the house surrounded with dark aura. Colonel was a dark, wicked, greedy man and his decedents are haunted with the consequences and the evil deeds of their ancestors. Similar to the Salem Witch trials, greed and lies covered the sins of both crimes and it haunted to future generations. Hawthorne xvii). Both stories closely resemble each other because Hawthorne has been greatly influenced from his cultural background and ancestral histories. Both Hawthorne and Pyncheon were the descendent of the Puritan. Because Hawthorne is influenced greatly with the Puritan beliefs, the novel, The House of Seven Gables, is expressed with full of puritan ideals, curses, and sins (xiii). Hawthorne, from his view of the witch trials, also criticized that Puritans were too self-righteous and lacked of human heart (Hall). The setting for the novel w as taken place at Salem, where the House of the Seven Gables exists, and it was also was where Hawthorne was born and raised. Maule also came from the name, Thomas Maule, a criticizer of the witch trials. The House of the Seven Gables too, was actually molded from his cousinââ¬â¢s, Susannah Ingersoll, house in the Massachusetts. It is also an actual incident that occurred during the witch trial that one of the victims of witch trial, Sarah Good, had told Reverent Noyes, the sinful accuser, that, ââ¬Å"if he took her life away, God would give him blood to drink! Many of the settings and characters were created from Hawthorneââ¬â¢s surrounding influences and people (Hawthorne xiii ââ¬â xx). Hawthorne uses curses as to symbolism of his past and present, influencing in many of his writings. In the preface, he stated, ââ¬Å"The wrong-doing of on generation lives into the successive ones, and divesting itself of every temporary advantage, becomes a pure and uncontrollable misc hiefâ⬠(Chandler 46). He believed that the sins and evils have passed down from the past and is binding them from happiness. It is said that Hawthorne even changed the spelling of his name, possibly to escape the shameful act of his processors. His novels gives traits of Hawthorneââ¬â¢s will of retribution and search of the remorse for the past mistakes of his ancestors. In The House of Seven Gables, he exploits that the past sins can be transmitted through generations and that just like the physical traits, and how the cursed family struggles to overcome this problem (Hawthorne xv-xvi). Hawthorne, in his novels, describes themes of the psychological moral struggles people go through in their existence. There was a moment in the book where Hawthorne showed the slight hope in concurring the sinful past. It was when a young man called Holgrave tells Pheobe Pyncheon about a story of Maule who intended to control Alice Pyncheon, a beautiful innocent girl, for the sake of his ances torââ¬â¢s revenge. Maule hiponized Alice and gained control of her, but in the end, his action led Alice into death, and Maule greatly regretted his action. As he finish telling the story, the atmosphere they had was similar of what was in the story; Holgrave had the power to control Pheobe because she was almost hypnotized situation by his stories. However, despite his longing and awkward relationship with Pyncheons, Holgrave chose the way to love and care for Pheobe instead of controlling her with his power. This progress, Hawthorne showed that it was possible to break and escape from the bond of the evil doings of their ancestors (Bell). In the end of the novel, Pheobe Pyncheon, a member of Pyncheon family, Holgrave, a descendent of Thomas Maule, falls in love. This was the moment when the curse of the Pyncheon was lifted from all the characters in the book. They got married and it will be a great progress to get over then coincidence between Matthew Maule and Alice Pyncheon. Fr om this passage, Hawthorne probably believed that the curse of ancestral sins and evils can be cured by the love and forgiving of the people. It is perhaps his marriage with Sophia Peabody and his love for her that led him thinking less of the deception of his ancestor and which led him to write the happy ending for the novel (Hawthorne 263-276). The novel ended with atonement and start of restoring the love that was lacked in the house (Brodhead 70).In the House of the Seven Gables, Nathaniel Hawthorne discusses the influence of ancestral consequences of wrongdoing upon the future generation. Hawthorne felt guilt and responsibility from the sins of his ancestors, and was haunted by them throughout his life. He believed that the sins will pass on through generations and he wrote this novel with this theme in his mind. However, the novel ended with happy ending where people found love that overcomes the hate and evil of the dark historical sins.
What Do You Look Forward?
I look forward to getting the best out of this program and come out a better nurse equipped and seasoned with sound knowledge and skills necessary to meet up with challenges in the healthcare system. However my greatest fear is time management Time management is very important in any area of life as success and failures are built upon it. It is my fear here as I have to juggle School, Work, family at the same time and meet up with the demands of each, allotting quality time to each section.Language barrier on the other hand possess a little bit of challenge to me as I have to advance my writings from undergraduate level to graduate level. My plan to overcome this fear is to be organized from day one which entails knowing my schedule, plan and stream line my activities via time table format. Make effort to follow my time table, remove procrastination from it but allow flexible time for any unforeseen circumstances that might come up along the way.Specific educational experience I enco untered was when I started school here in a traditional class room, it was very difficult for me to comprehend what my instructors was teaching and also for them to understand me because of my accent. My fear was how to succeed in my education when I donââ¬â¢t understand the classroom lectures. I am even too afraid to ask questions fearing that they will not understand me or even laugh at me. I am fine studying my textbook at home but it is not enough as major and important points are highlighted in the lecture notes. So my first step in addressing this fear was to meet with my instructors after class and tell them my problem. Second step was to use the learning resources available at the college and attended series of passport classes for international students. This tutoring classes and one on one session with most of my instructors took all my spare and family time but it did pay off at the end of the semester with good grades. These resources helped me to overcome my fear, und erstand my instructors, and ask questions in class, improved on note taking skills and above all good grades. Faculty Association Management System Essay
INTRODUCTION Nowadays, several universities or schools are in of what we called rapidly growing technologies in our industry and LSPU is one of them. The researchers are proposing the Faculty Association Management System to provide faculty members an up-to-date information about FA. Faculty Association is an association of rank file faculty members or those not holding any managerial or confidential functions. The members of the Faculty association are the faculty members of LSPU from all external and satellite campuses. The software engineers proposed this system called, ââ¬Å"Faculty Association Management Systemâ⬠(FAMS) to inform the faculty members on what is going on about their association. The system includes update of PDS, messaging, list of officials, financial status of the organization, membership, updates, financial transparency, campus election and security. This system is not only for LSPU-Siniloan campus but also to all satellite and external campuses of LSPU. Only the members can view the said system because the researchers added the feature of what we called security it terms of no one can enter or log-in into the system unless otherwise, you are one of the members. If one member wants to be part of the association, he must undergo membership. The admin of the association is responsible for creating the initial account of the faculty in which the username and password are default. Then, the rest of the info will be answered by him. Afterwards, he is free to access the system right after agreeing in the license agreement. There is a note that will say you success or failed. There are lots of features inside the system that will surely help the members and donââ¬â¢t have to suffer from headache in facilitating the flow and growth of the association. Project Description The researchers will propose this project entitled, Faculty Association Management System to create a systematic management with the implication of ICT facilities through web and a website that manages faculty association interactively. Project Purpose including the Beneficiaries and Benefits A.To have an up-to-date faculty association management membership profile. B.To consolidate the faculty association membersââ¬â¢ record of the different campuses. C.To set financial transparency among the members of the association. D.To disseminate information through the use of internet and accessible in multiple mobile platforms. Scope and Limitations The scope of the study will focus on the Faculty Association Management System only covering such processes such as renewal of membership, online messaging and chatting, list of officials, financial status of the organization, membership, updates, financial transparency and campus election. The memberââ¬â¢s classifications are limited only to four (4) campuses of LSPU: Siniloan, Sta. Cruz, Los Baà ±os and San Pablo. It will be facilitated by the admin of the organization. Definition of Terms The different terms used in the study were defined conceptually and operationally to have a better understanding of the study, these were the following: Project Definition of Terms The following terminologies were operationally defined to fully understand the system: MySQL. It is the worldââ¬â¢s second most widely used open-source relational database management system. It is named after co-founder Michael Wideniusââ¬â¢s daughter, My. The SQL phrase stands for Structured Query Language. HTML. Stands for Hypertext Markup Language. A standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages. Flow chart. It is a graphical representation of a computer program in relation to its sequence of functions (as distinct from the data it processes). Diagram. It is a simplified drawing showing the appearance, structure, or workings ofà something; a schematic representation. Faculty. It is the teaching staff of a university or college, or of one of its departments or divisions, viewed as a body. Transparency. It is operating in such a way that it is easy for others to see what actions are performed. It has been defined simply as ââ¬Å"the perceived quality of intentionally shared information from a senderâ⬠. XAMPP. It is a free and open source cross-platform web server solution stack package, consisting mainly of the Apache HTTP Server, MySQL database, and interpreters for scripts written in the PHP and Perl programming languages. Website. It is a location connected to the Internet that maintains one or more pages on the World Wide Web. Database. Is a collection of information about the subject organized in a useful manner that provides a base and foundation for procedure such as retrieving information and drawing calculation. PHP. Stands for Hypertext Preprocessor, an open source, server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynami c Web pages. Chapter 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES The researchers present some of previous related works relevant to the understanding of the problem. In order to gather information needed by the proponent used book and other capstone projects. Related Literature The researchers will present some of previews studies relevant to the understanding of the problem. In order to gather information needed by the proponent in online information and other thesis projects. Chapter 3 PROJECT METHODOLOGY On this project methodology, the proponents discussed the system guidelines and step by step procedure for the system proposal. Project Design The project design of this system is to establish an online management that will resolve and improve the existing manual transaction of Faculty Association to an updated, interactive and informative online process to prevent the miscommunication and delaying of transaction in informing meetings and activities of the association. Development Design System Design System Flow Chart Project Procedures In this phase, the researchers gathered all the data needed to put up a good flow of the system. They collected some forms such as registration form and financial status form. They interviewed their pilot client which is the Faculty Association of LSPU-SC. They asked some questions to the head of the association and answered some of it. They asked them if they are agreeing to make a project which is Faculty Association Management System that will help them improve the existing system. In building the system, the developers used PHP for web design and layout since it is compatible with different operating system, MYSQL for database process and JavaScript, jquery, ajax for other scripting functionality that could enhance the system process. The development of the system is based upon the needs and difficulties of the members who are part of the said association. The study was conducted to help the members communicate easily with each other and make computerized system. 1. Requirement Analysis The developers provide a good website wherein all members of FA will be updated about what is being announced and happenings in the association. 2. Designing the Software The developers went to the head of FA at LSPU-SC to gather some information needed to perform the study. Theyââ¬â¢ve list down some questions to answer by the head and will become the basis of the proposed system. 3. Building the Software After conceptualizing the design of the system, the developers focused on building the structure and functionality of the system. The developers used PHP for web design, MySQL for database process, JavaSrcipt for scripting functionality. 4. Testing the Software The developers did a lot of testing to be able to identify the bugs and other problems that may arise in using the system. They uploaded it in a domain to prove that it is working online and will be used by the users effectively. 5. Implementing the Software After a series of testing, the developers proved that the system they have made was efficient and effective. The developers together with the FA head run the system and see to it that it is working.

Marketing strategy is most effective when it is an integral component of corporate strategy, defining how the organization will engage customers, prospects and the competition in the market arena for success. A marketing strategy also serves as the foundation of a marketing plan.A marketing plan contains a set of specific actions required to successfully implement a marketing strategy. For example: ââ¬Å"Use of a low cost product to attract consumers. Once an organization, via its low cost product, has established a relationship with consumers, the organization will sell additional, higher-margin products and services that enhance the consumer's interaction with the low-cost product or service. â⬠A strategy consists of well thought out series of tactics. Without a sound marketing strategy, a marketing plan has no foundation.Marketing strategies serve as the fundamental underpinning of marketing plans designed to reach marketing objectives. It is important that these objectives have measurable results. olicies, and action sequences (tactics) into a cohesive whole. Many companies cascade a strategy throughout an organization, by creating strategy tactics that then become strategy goals for the next level or group. Each group is expected to take that strategy goal and develop a set of tactics to achieve that goal. This is why it is important to make each strategy goal measurable. So to evaluate the marketing strategy a simple tool is to relate the sales volume of the organization under study. The measurement also includes the long term impact of marketing strategy on consumers in their buying habits. http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/ Marketing_strategy) 1. 6 Report Preview Introduction to the report, objective, methodology has been given in the first chapter. These are: Due to the resource constraint the research has been done by Judgmental sampling and is limited within the Dhaka city. Though it covers the main and major dealers, still the market of semi urban and rural part may not be reflected properly. Because of organizational restriction, no name and details of the status of classified information could be revealed. However a good number of local paint manufacturing companies (40 organized and at least 50 more in the informal sector) have been operating in this small market. Quite a few of these companies are producing paints of internationally of the local paint companies is double the present local market demand. The paint market is still mostly concentrated in the urban areas naturally because the number of constr uctions and surface areas are in huge number in the urban side. Urban side contributes almost 80% of the national paint market. But companies are trying to penetrate the semi urban and rural market through the economy paints.Contribution of Urban, Semi-urban and Rural Market in 2006 is shown in the following fgure: Figure 1 : Geographical Market Size (Source: Berger Sales and Marketing Team) The paint industry can be broadly categorized into four segments: Decorative, Industrial, Marine and Automotive paints. Industrial paints are basically specially produced paints, which are used in two ways. Industrial paint is being used in some industries as the raw materials which are the regular consumer of such paints. The segment uses such paint for the protective and maintenance purpose.Marine paints are produced specially for the river and sea going vessels and the automotive paints are being used in the automobile sector. All the rest fall in the decorative category. It covers all the pa ints for the exterior and the interior surfaces of plaster, metal and wood. This is the biggest segment of the paint industry.
